Samsung BD-P1580 Blu-Ray Player Review

Samsung Electronics is one of the world leaders in manufacturing of home entertainment devices such as DVD Players, Televisions, and Speakers etc. The new craze that seems to be the successor of DVD Player is the Blu-ray Player. They read Blu-ray discs that store data 10 times more than a standard DVD and, apart from that, they will be able to deliver stunning high definition video and amazing high definition audio. Samsung has the distinction of being the first manufacturer to manufacture a Blu-ray player.

In 2008, Rivals like Panasonic had launched players with Profile 2.0 whereas Samsung was still shipping Profile 1.1 players. 2009 marked the release of Samsung’s sixth generation player, the Samsung BD-P1580.  The stylish black coloured device incorporates the usage of state of the art technology for maximum efficiency. In spite of being a budget player, the 1580 goes a step ahead by offering extra features like BD Live and Ethernet port. Another pleasant surprise is the inclusion of Anynet+ that allows the player to be operated by a Samsung TV remote. The main focus is still on the functionality of the device and it does not disappoint. Let us have a closer look at the Samsung BD-P1580 Blu-ray disc player.

Samsung BD-P1580 Blu-Ray Player

Design:

Sleek design:
The Samsung BD-P1580 resembles a standard DVD Player. Glossy and with a smooth finish, it looks complimentary to Samsung televisions.  With dimensions of (H x W x D) 150mm x 350mm x 535mm, it is sleek, but to be honest, there are slimmer players in the market than this such as Samsung’s very own BD-P4600.

Simple Front Panel:
At the fascia of the device is tray for the Blu-ray disc on the left. At the centre, is present the LED indicator that indicates how long the Blu-ray disc is being played. On the right side are buttons that help one use the Blu-ray player, which include eject, rewind, stop, play and fast forward.  There is a power button at the right most side of the front panel. Below the row of buttons is a USB port. While that is one way to add firmware updates to the player, it also enables one to view JPEG pictures and DivX video files.

Set up:
Setting up the BD-P1580 Blu Ray Disc Player is a piece of cake. Technology is designed to get easier as time goes on. Most things seem to be self tuning and plug in and play. This one is no different; all we needed to do was connect the player to the TV via a HDMI lead and connect the audio cable to a home theatre system and it was ready. The TV was able to detect the player even while the player is switched off. Once the player is plugged in, one has to setup the time and date, the language used and check if audio is set to digital output. After that, you have to add the player to a network and place parental controls if needed.

Samsung BD-P1580 Remote control

Features:

Full HD Blu-ray player:
Since Blu-ray discs have far more storage than an ordinary DVD, picture and sound quality would not have to be compromised. The quality levels are hence much improved than that on a regular DVD as it generates vividly realistic images with outstanding clarity. An ordinary movie will look realistic, thanks to Full HD 1080p picture quality and sound. Apart from playing great quality movies, the player also features decent connectivity options such as USB, Wireless connectivity and BD Live. But a separate Wi-Fi dongle is needed to take advantage of wireless connectivity.

1080P up-scaling:
Another interesting feature of the Samsung BD-P1580 Blu Ray Player is the 1080p up scaling. What does up-scaling mean? Samsung not only plays your Blu-ray titles, but also plays DVD titles and “up-scale” their image and audio quality to near HD giving a better output than an ordinary DVD player.

HD audio format support:
The terms High Definition might mislead most of us into thinking that it is all about video. But in fact Blu-ray players also compliment great video with High definition sound. The BD P 1580 is capable of generating digital audio sounds thanks to Dolby True HD and DTS audio.

HDMI out:
The Blu-ray player features HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) which eliminates the need for multiple cables. It is a standard digital cable that is transmitting the highest quality video and audio content without any sort of compression.

Anynet+:
Samsung’s Anynet + is an AV network system that allows controlling Samsung audio video devices using a single remote thus eliminating the need for different remote controls for different devices. This is highly handy if there are a lot of Samsung appliances at home. You could use your TV remote to control the blu-ray player as well. With this, one does not need to fumble through several remote to pause a show.

BD Live & BonusView:
In order to complete the whole new experience of High definition television, Samsung has a separate feature known as BonusView that allows one to watch additional features such as commentary, interviews, subtitles, etc. in a second window while the main movie is playing.  BD Live allows one to connect to the Internet and access even more content such as movie reviews, games etc related to the movie being watched. To hook up to BD Live, one has to connect the Ethernet cable to permit entry. Mind you, you would not be able to access internet totally, only stuff that are hosted on servers by the Hollywood studios. But you can download content and store it in the player’s inbuilt memory of 256MB.

USB host:
The Blu-ray player has a USB host that allows direct playback of music, pictures and videos from USB devices.  Thanks to a USB host, you no longer need to move contents to a PC and burn them to a CD/DVD before playing back. You can just connect a digital camera directly to the blu-ray player and view the pictures on television.

Firmware Updates:
Samsung provides regular firmware updates to keep people updated with recent technology and improvements. To access these updates one needs to connect using Ethernet, by linking a USB drive or with a CD/BD. Because downloading manually using Ethernet is slow, we recommend you download those updates on a PC and then load them into a USB and plug them to the player.

Samsung BD-P1580 Blu Ray Disc Player

Performance:

When we inserted a Blu-ray disc, it took about 30 seconds to load which is way longer than what one has to wait for on a DVD player. But, that is roughly the time taken by most players to read a Blu-ray disc.  We put on Snow white and the Seven Dwarfs and, we were impressed with how clear the letterings were. The colours were highly vibrant and gave the seventy year old film a new look and feel. While the video was amazingly up scaled, the audio did not see much improvement. Next, we tried on a Blu-ray title “Bridge to Terabithia” and we have to admit, the special effects were impressive for a budget blu-ray player. Rural locations in the movie looked highly vibrant with lush green grass and sparkling blue skies. The sound quality is improved and is far better than the one on ordinary DVD.  WE did have issues with the player as it is capable of playing only Region 2 discs which is a problem if one has a lot of other region discs.

Power Consumption:

The Power consumption of the BD-P1580 is very meager. It consumes a maximum of 20 watts while playing movies and lesser than 1.5 watts in standby mode.

What’s in the Box?

Apart from the Samsung BD-P1580, one gets a remote control, a composite audio cable, batteries for the remote and user manual. We were surprised not to find a HDMI cable included as it is essential for connecting the player to the television. For High Definition images, you can connect the player using a DVI cable or a TV component lead. While HDMI cables vary in price, you can get a decent one for about 15 pounds. Mind you, that is additional cost and adds up to the cost of the Blu-ray player.

Warranty:

The Samsung BDP 1580 comes with a warranty of one year from the date of purchase.

Verdict:

The BD-P1580 impressed us unexpectedly. It is easy to setup and very easy to use. Picture quality and sound quality are a huge step up from a regular DVD and this increase in quality is worth if you enjoy watching films. But what makes the Samsung BDP 1580 a real winner is its real ease of use. It’s simple plug and play which does not present any problems for novices. Another neat touch is the Anynet+ feature. While it works automatically on a Samsung TV, there are codes available to make it work for other brands. However this would have been a better product had a HDMI cable been included and it were compatible for all region discs. Nevertheless, the BD-P1580 is definitely recommended if you want a Blu-ray player that is cheap and yet delivers a decent performance and you happen to live in Region 2.

Sony BDP-S560 Blu Ray Player Review

Entertainment is now on a whole new level. From theatres to home theatres, people are looking for a high definition experience every time. From HD movies to the high end games, everything is now coming in the form of Blu Ray Discs. In order to decode them, the Blu ray players are being released at a rapid rate into the market, and some of them from, particularly from Sony are regarded as the best players of high definition movies. Now, as we all know, Sony occupies the front row seat in producing all the latest and also the finest of electronic goods in the market. It has lately released the BDP S series Blu Ray players, which comprises the BDP-S560, which is widely known for its quality and low price tag. Continue reading to know more.

Sony BDP-S560 Blu Ray Player

Design:

The BDP S560 is one of the cutest looking Blu ray players you will find in the market. It is very sleek and stylish in appearance and it has also got a shiny look. It looks very rectangular and the metallic finish on the outside makes it even more attractive. All the sides have a metallic black finish and the front bezel is faintly coloured with blue tint, which is a trademark feature of Sony. This makes the complete design of the S560 and it has one of the best designs ever for a Blu Ray player. There is an LCD panel on the right hand side at the front and here is where you see the display. The digital LCD display is very clear and it is visible from even considerable distances. Then, there are the primary control buttons that can be operated and there is also an infrared panel that receives the signals from the remote controller. On the bottom right hand side of it is the HDMI port. Hence, the S560 is wonderfully engineered in order to make it apt to almost all kinds of environment.

Features:

Sony’s Blu ray players have always had good number of features. Now, coming to the S560, there are a few additions to the past features and they all form a great package of features that will be very useful and it also makes it easy for you to entertain yourself. Here is a brief detail about each and every feature that is seen on the S560.

Full HD 1080:
Most of today’s HD TVs are coming with this special feature. The latest screen resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels, which means that, you will get splendid picture clarity, which is known as 1080p. Hence, it will be great if your Blu Ray player has this particular feature as well. It is known as the Full HD 1080 and it gives a meaningful look to the pictures on the screen of your HD TV. This does not mean that it is not compatible with TVs other than the HD TVs, but it will be great if you have the combination of both of them. Thus, go for the S560, if you wish to experience digital clarity and full HD.

DVD Upscaling:
This has been a very unique as well as one of the very useful features that you will find on the Blu Ray players from Sony. The DVD upscaling means that you can also play your DVDs on your S560, and also with a quality that meets the standards of a Blu ray disc. What happens here is that, when a DVD is played with the S560, the player takes the additional responsibility of upscaling the information on the disc, or in other words, it improves the quality of your pictures. If not perfect HD pictures, you will still receive pictures that are near the high definition range. Improvisation is never better elsewhere as the Sony BDP-S560 Blu Ray Disc Player is a master in doing it.

Built in Wi-Fi:
This special feature has become a part of the daily round. For the past half a decade or so, this feature is being used in many electronic devices and its utility has now increased to a great extent. To be a little more confirmative of this fact, you can see that there is almost no Blu Ray player in the market without Wi-Fi. This built in wireless functionality, technically called as 802.11 N/G/B/A, allow you to connect to the internet directly and then stream and download BD Live Content, about which we will talk later in detail. To make it easier for the users, Sony has seen to it that the S560 is compatible with most home wireless routers. In addition to that, this Sony BDP-S560 Blu Ray Player also corroborates Wi-Fi protected set-up, or the WPS system, for means of a fast and simple connection to all WPS enabled wireless routers. Hence, you can do everything wirelessly and that too within seconds.

Bravia Sync:
If you have a Sony Bravia LCD TV at your home, then you cannot ask for more from the S560. This is the best available combination in the market today. You might have already known about this Bravia Sync feature. With the help of the HDMI cables, you can connect your TV and the S560 and hence experience high definition pictures from your Bravia TV. No problem even if you do not have a Bravia TV as this is just an extra option for those who have it. This means that you will have a direct connection from your player to your TV, thereby giving you the best quality of pictures and videos.

USB 2.0:
Even though there are plenty of options for watching movies and stuff, Sony has also provided the USB 2.0 port just in case, so that you can download and save the media files from the internet through BD Live. You can also transfer movies and music files from your computer to the USB flash drive and then play them by connecting it to the S560 Blu Ray Player from Sony. Hence, this is another feature that strengthens the connectivity of the S560.

Photo Streaming:
This is a sub feature that takes the help of Wi-Fi. You can stream photos very easily by connecting the S560 to your computer, laptop, mobile phone (that is Wi-Fi compatible) or any other DLNA device (Digital Living Network Alliance) and then browse for pictures on your HD TV. You also have the option to select the photos for viewing or to start an automatic slide show of the pictures either in a sequence or at random. This might be a very useful feature because of the fact that there is no need to connect the devices by using wires, so that you will be saving your time and also patience. No matter where in your house these devices are, they will be identified and connected automatically by this special feature, so that photo streaming becomes very easy.

BD Live Technology:
Yet another one of the cool features of the Sony BDP-S560 DVD Player is the BD Live Technology. This technology is pertained to Sony only and is one of its unique features. You have scores of options when it comes to streaming pictures, movies, videos, trailers, music, short films and many other media files. You can connect the player to the internet and then stream all the media and select them for playing on your TV instantly. You can also download them into the temporary memory of the player in order to play the content in the future. Some movie based games can also be downloaded and played using this facility. This means that you can watch movies readily even if you do not have a DVD or BD available at that time. For downloading media files that need more memory, you need to connect a USB flash drive to your player and then you can download them easily.

XV Colour Output:
The XV Colour output is a special feature that makes your S560 player play AVCHD-format discs that have the endorsement for the international XYYCC colour standard, and thereby producing images with great clarity and contrast. To be more specific, this XV colour feature enables the player to play the old pictures with nearly twice as many colours as the current international RGB colour standard. What happens here is the S560 reads the old discs and it amplifies the output signal and a special processor adds more colours to the pictures so that the final picture on the screen looks a lot better and also more natural, so that you will not feel the pictures as old and degraded. This option can also be used when you feel that the picture quality on the disc is too bad or less lively when it comes to the colour.

Xross Media Bar:
When there are special features on your player, it means that there is a need for a new menu for easy access to all the options. This new menu is a must now for all the Blu Ray players. When it comes to the S560, you will find a very exciting new menu, which is obviously very different from others and also very stylish in its own manner. The Xross Media Bar, as it is called in this case, is a kind of user interface that makes things easy for you as it is very simple as well as time saving to navigate through the different features, accessibilities, television menus, various control options, and also user settings. The menu is also well designed by grouping the similar functions and their options together so that it will be easier for navigation. Hence, with this menu, you will just be a few clicks away from entertainment.
Clearly, it is evident that Sony has made sure that the S560 has more features than any other player in the market. Already, this is great news as you can have a single player for multiple entertainment options.

Sony BDP-S560 Blu Ray Disc Player

Performance:

Video Performance of S560:
Blu Ray Picture itself is a kind of adjective. The Sony BD S560 is an excellent player that provides you great pictures with the best quality and contrast. It is capable of reading the data exactly from the Blu ray discs and then reproducing them without almost any time lag. The 24p True Cinema helps you watch the movies with a special theatre like experience as the pictures are blended into 24 frames per second, which makes them more realistic. If the performance of the S560 were to be declared in a single word, the word would be ‘fantastic’.

Audio Performance:
The S560 comes with a very good decoding technology that gives you optimum quality of sound. Just like on most of the highly rated Blu Ray players, the S560 has the Dolby Digital True HD decoder that gives you a digital output, so that you can connect your player to a home theatre system and enjoy 3D surround sound effect. Added to this, there is the DTS HD internal decoding system that is a unique feature of this Blu ray player. This special system adds to the already wonderful surround sound effect. Now, this means that your pictures will have a great support from the audio and watching movies was never so great before.

Connectivity:
As we have already discussed above, the S560 is blessed with a range of connectivity options and this has made it easy for you to connect it to many other devices at home. The built in Wi-Fi is not only a very good feature, but it is also a great performer. The connection is very stable and the speed is higher than that of the other players in the market. Ethernet port also is a good idea because sometimes it may be more useful than Wi-Fi and especially while downloading different media files from the internet. The HDMI ports allow high definition picture performance and a direct connection between the player and your TV. The USB 2.0 port is also useful for saving the downloaded media and also for playing movies and other stuff easily. Overall, wherever you see, the S560 is a tailor made player that knows nothing other than providing you entertainment.

Sony BDP-S560 Rear View

Power Consumption:

You will see that the S560 is one of the low power consuming players in the market. While in normal mode, it consumes about 31 W of power, which is very low by any means. Normally, the power ratings of other players, be them either Blu Ray or DVD players, they are significantly higher. There is also the standby mode, during which the player consumes less than 1 W power. When the player is not used for a while but it is still switched on, it goes into the standby mode, thereby saving your energy bills.

Warranty:

The Sony S560 Blu-ray player comes with a parts and labour warranty for a period of one year from the original date of purchase.

Verdict:

There is no doubt that Sony is one of the best brands in consumer electronics. The S560 has once again proved that with all the style in the globe and also a unique design. And, the list of features is longer than that of its counterparts from LG and Samsung. You can really count on its performance since it gives out a full HD output, which will be ideal for watching movies. Another important thing here is that the cost of this player is also quite low when compared with the other prime products in the market, and that too after having lots of features and extra options. So, if you ever wanted to buy a wonderful BD player, the Sony BDP-S560 is the one for you.

LG BD390 Blu-Ray Player Review

If somebody comes back to this world after a break of ten or may be even five years, he/she would certainly be shocked to see the immense technology that is being used currently in every walk of life. New features that are never seen before are sprouting everyday in order to boost up the performance of the electronic goods and also to widen their range of utilities. Blu-Ray players, which are an extension to the already pretty famous and well established DVD players, have become one of the revolutionary brainchildren that have, in some way or the other, changed the outlook of entertainment. The latest BD players are not there for simply playing the BD ROMs, but they have other magnificent functions too, which make them one of the most wanted devices.

LG has been one of those companies that have been right at the top when it comes to the production of goods that meet the global standards. After releasing a few BD players in the past, it has unleashed its latest one, the LG BD 390. This one is undoubtedly the best till date from LG and stands among the best in the business. Let us see its details so as to find out how good it is.

LG BD390 Blu-Ray Player

Decent Design:

The products from LG are normally associated with good design. The BD390 is not an exception to this. There are some remarks that its design is lifted from the Sony’s BDP S550 that came out last year. But the BD 390 has its own attributes to boast about. First of all, the overall look of the player is cute and more formal. Unlike Samsung that is pretty much renowned for producing uncanny and very innovative designs, LG always tries to keep is simple and smart. The measurements are also fine, with a width of 17”, a depth of 10.9”, height of 2.2 inches and the unit weighs about 6 pounds, which is just about normal for a DVD/BD player.

Exploring a little bit more on the aspect of the overall design, the front panel looks glossy and reflective. The LCD screen is near the centre of the fascia. This LCD gives you very good digital display that is clear and bright and it is viewable from anywhere in your room. But the issue is that, its brightness level cannot be altered and always stays bright. There are the four common playback buttons, by the side of the display screen. Then there is the USB port, to the extreme left of the player. This is used to quickly plug in the USB 2.0 and play the media files instantaneously. The port is covered by a plastic lid that is removable. Hence, the player is very decent on the outlook and will well compliment your expensive LCD TV. In short, your home theatre is complete with the LG BD 390.

Features:

The LG BD390 introduces some of the very best features you have ever seen in a Blu Ray player. As discussed earlier, this is not only a Blu Ray Player but is has many other utilities. So, it certainly has to be loaded with features. These features are also better than the ones found in the previous BD players from LG and are also ranked very high.

User Interface:

User interface will be the first thing that will grab your attention when you switch on the BD390 Blu Ray Disc Player with wireless connectivity. The user interface has suddenly become so better and with scores of options in your hand. The most striking feature of this interface is that they look so posh. The user interface screen appears very colour ful with very good graphics and stylish looking icons. Although LG has always provided good user interfaces before, it is much better now because of the new options on offer. There are a lot of improvements made in this sector too. When you go to the home menu, you will find a neat array of icons giving you different options including Movie, Photo, Music, My Media, NetFlix, YouTube, Cinema Now and Setup. Scrolling through these options, you will be feeling that this menu looks great and very graphical like the ones in the PlayStation and Xbox.

Remote control:

You will find that the remote that has come with the BD 390, is one of the better ones for a Blu Ray Player. There is nothing fuzzy there and all the buttons are neatly grouped. This means that you will find that the more frequently used buttons are on the upper portion of the remote. There is a big direction pad at the top and a few other useful buttons like the home button and the disc menu button. Obviously, they are of much importance when compared to the other buttons that perform inferior tasks. Some of the additional controls are beneath a slide down cover so that the remote looks fine from the outside, without the crowding of the buttons, but important functions like channel and volume controls are also available beneath which makes it difficult to operate at times as these controls are to be used regularly.

LG BD390 Front and Rear View

Wi-Fi:

WiFi is yet another one of those you will find everywhere in the world. This Wi-Fi or the wireless internet is now deeply rooted into our lives. All the entertainment devices like form the small music players to the large HD televisions feature Wi-Fi as one of their top lineaments. With this Wi-Fi facility in the BD 390, you can simply connect to the internet and then browse for music, pictures and videos. You can also save these videos and play them in the future. The receiver of the BD390 Blu Ray DVD Player is so good that it connects and works well even with the slow wireless connections. It is like a strong man who can survive even with a little supplement of energy.

Ethernet Connection:

There is also an option for you to connect the LG BD390 Blu Ray Video Player to the internet using wireless LAN or an Ethernet port. You can avail this feature if you feel that the wireless internet connection is too slow and the videos are buffering for a lot of time. There is a port at the back side of the player that can be used for connecting the cable. This is in particular, a very interesting feature. This one makes no difference when it comes to the BD 390 and a computer. Both of them actually function in the same way when it comes to the internet connection and also browsing for videos. There are also a lot of connectivity protocols like IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11n (draft), IEEE 802.11b (Wi-Fi), IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet), and IEEE 802.3u (Fast Ethernet). There is also the DLNA type sharing of the home network media. This means, you have many an option to choose in order to connect to the internet.

YouTube:

YouTube has become one of the prime features everywhere nowadays. You will find it in the music players, in pocket PCs, in the mobile phones and even in the high definition televisions. As it is such a vital force when it comes to video watching, LG has also come up with the YouTube feature. You will find this feature right on the home menu screen and when you select it, you will be seeing a few options for you to select, just like the ones you will see on the web. It shows you the videos that are recently played, the featured videos, the videos that are most viewed, the top rated videos, the videos that are being watch at present and also there is a search option that enables you to search for the videos of your interest. You will be getting an array of videos on the screen and you can select any one of them and play it. Just like in your computer, the videos are first played in a small window and you can always turn this window to full screen by pressing the display button. The quality of the picture does not deteriorate when playing in the full screen mode. This feature is very simple, user friendly in nature and is also very responsive.

Netflix:

The recent Blu Ray players released by LG have all featured the Netflix option. Netflix is a unique feature introduced by LG. With this feature, you can stream anything on the web using the Wi-Fi. When the Netflix option that appears on the Home Screen is selected, you will be seeing a screen which contains the instant queue of the videos that are available. Most of them are actually movies so that you gain instant access to movies. There is an option called ‘Watch Now’ in the Netflix. In this Watch Now section, you can browse for videos and watch them instantly. While there are minor blemishes in this feature, it is an excellent experience of browsing through this feature and watching videos. In the beginning, there were very few videos to watch but now, there are many options for you to select from, as Netflix has recently signed deals with Disney and CBS. This is a very sweet news for movie lovers.

Internal Memory:

The LG BD390 has an internal memory of 1GB to provide you some space while downloading the videos. You do not normally associate this feature with the BD players and it is not as common as in the phones or music players. Previously, the BD players required an external memory stick in order to instantaneously provide some memory to it. This necessity is now removed by the introduction of the internal memory. Even though 1 GB is not a big thing, it is certainly better than nothing.

Cinema Now:

This is pretty much one of the unique features of the BD 390. The Cinema Now feature gives you the option of streaming the videos across the web. Just like cable television or the satellite television that you have, you can select the channels that you would like to watch and then pay for them on a monthly basis. It is like the pay per view and is very useful for the lovers of movies and videos. This feature brings you more movie releases, mostly new ones. Even then, it is not as good as expected at least when compared to the Netflix option that is detailed above. Although it is a pretty option in the BD 390, it is not as powerful as being the decisive factor for you in order to choose this particular BD player.

Quick start up:

The response time of the BD 390 is top notch. LG BD390 loads the discs in just about 11 seconds when the player is switched on. When the player is switched off, it took about 25 seconds to load and read a disc that is already inside it. This is almost like icing the cake. To start up in such less time and that too with so many features included in it, is really a commendable effort put in by LG.

Firmware upgrade:

The facility to upgrade the firmware of the player is also a good idea. You can, for example, upgrade the latest firmware in order to utilise the Cinema Now feature to the optimum extent. This is a fine option to have with you because LG can release a few updates in the future regarding features or other firmware so that you can upgrade your player.

In short, these features are all very utile and at the end of the day, they only add to the elegance of the BD 390.

LG BD390 Blu-Ray Disc Player

Performance:

When we talked about all the features, it is quite natural that anyone would expect the performance of the player. But the player beat the expectations and it produced more than good performance. All the design part of it and the special features, which seemed to be the main facets of the player, are now humiliated by the picture quality of the player. It is guaranteed that you will enjoy sitting in your couch and watching excellent movies and videos on the BD 390. There are in particular three aspects that you will have to concentrate on when you are looking for the performance of a BD player or any electronic device for that matter. They are: Video support and performance, Audio performance and the connectivity of the player. The BD 390 has passed all the tests relating to these performance aspects and stood as one of the best performers.

A Lot of Video Support:

The LG BD390 not only plays the Blu Ray format, but it supports a variety of audio, picture and video formats through the USB connection. It can play almost any format of media like: MP3, JPEG, PNG, WMA, AVI, XVid, DivX-HD and the MKV. Particularly, there are a lot of files that are encrypted in the MKV format and not many players can play them. Even in the computers, you will find that only the VLC media player can play such rare file formats. The MPEG-2 files also played very well on the BD 390. So, LG has done a world of good by making its BD 390 to play even the MKV format. So, with such an array of file formats, you can now watch anything on the BD 390 without ever converting the videos into simple formats.
There is not only a great support for the video formats, but there is also the technology with the BD 390 that can provide the highest image quality. It provides you upscaling up to about 1080p. So, with the BD 390, you can watch great pictures. Normally you get great picture clarity from the BD discs. But the BD 390 can even play the DVDs very well and it draws out every little detail out of the pictures and gives you the optimum output.

Audio Support:

You need a good audio support from your player in order to accompany the excellent picture quality that we have already seen above. The Blu Ray players from LG have always been very good decoders of audio. The BD 390 decodes onboard for soundtracks like the DTS High Definition Master Audio and also the well renowned Dolby True HD. This tells you that the audio can be decoded from almost any of the receivers from the HDMI cable. But if you want the decoding to be done in your Audio Video receiver, then it can do the same by the Bit Stream output.

The BD 390 supports audio formats like AAC, MP3, WMA and PCM. This also means that the player can decode audio from the DVDs too, many of which have the files in DTS formats like Neo 6, ES matrix, ES, and DTS 96/24. This is very good news because there are very few BD players in the market that have such an audio decoding range. A dynamic audio range of 95 dB, a signal to noise ratio of 100 dB and the total harmonic distortion of about 0.008 %, all of these statistics show you how great the player’s audio range is. So, the audio part of it has been up to the mark and it complements the videos very well.

Connectivity:

The connectivity of the BD 390 has been very good, to say the least. There are lots of ports available at the back side of the player, allowing you to have numerous connections from the BD 390. First of all, when you turn towards the back side of the player, you will see a slot for the HDMI connection. This slot allows you to connect to the HD TVs. Then abreast it is the LAN port that helps you to connect to the Ethernet modem using a cable. This is a good facility. Then if you move to the centre of the panel, you will see a series of ports available for the component video out. There are also two channel speaker ports at the bottom, by the side of the Video out terminal. The former is used to connect to the external speakers and the latter is for the connection to the television. Then you have the 7.1 channel analogue output. With these ports, you can connect to the 7.1 channel speakers and hence get the optimum 3 D surround sound and home theatre experience.
Overall, the BD 390 is a very good performer. Both the audio and video are very good and there were no problems reported while testing it. You will certainly get a pretty good value for your money.  Life is really good with the LG BD 390.

Power Consumption:

The rate of power consumption of the BD 390 is comparatively low. It consumes only 21 watts of power on an average. The power supply is internal type.

Warranty:

LG offers warranty to the LG Blu Ray player 390 against any flaws in the craftsmanship or in the device. Persistent to the warranty details given below, LG will repair the product or replace it with a new piece, depending on the situation. There are two types of warranties for the LG products and in particular, the LG BD 390.

The first one is the warranty for the parts of the device for 1 year and the other one is the labour warranty which is for 90 days. To obtain any of the warranties mentioned, you must either take it to the service centre or mail the device to the LG service centres with the packaging conditions almost equal, if not same, to the original packaging. A receipt of the product must be produced at the centres to avail the offer of warranty.

Verdict:

The BD 390 is excellent for a BD player. Even though there is a good value for your money, it is quite common that one feels it is a bit costlier than normal. You almost get a PlayStation or a Microsoft Xbox game console for the same rate. So, the cost of the player is a bit on the high note. This may lead many customers to drop out because one, they may not afford that much for a BD player and two, they may not feel it necessary to spend too much on it. But other than this, one cannot complain of anything in the BD 390. The design is pretty, the features are really good and the performance is tiptop. The connectivity of the player is peculiarly very good. All these make the LG BD 390 very buyable and one of the best Blu Ray players. You cannot expect any more from any player for that matter. The LG BD 390 has got it all. What else do you need in your player?

Sony BDPS760B Blu-Ray Player

With the introduction of the Blu-ray discs, HD movies and video games are easier to play like never before. Most of the latest HD movies are available in the Blu-ray discs and to be short, these Blu-ray discs have replaced the DVDs in most of the areas. Hence, all the manufacturers of the electronic goods around the world have started to compete with each other by producing higher-end Blu-ray disc players. As a part of this, Sony has produced many good ones but its latest one, the BDPS760B, is a masterpiece. This time around, Sony has not concentrated on the looks and the design of the player, but it has its attention mainly on the performance.

Design and Display:

As already discussed, Sony did not focus much on its design. Even then, it is fine. It may not be a peach of a design and the players of other manufacturers like LG and Samsung have better designs.  But at least, it has a shiny look.  Its dimensions, (W x H x D) 430 x 70 x 246 mm seems to be a fairly medium in size. Also, it weighs only 3 kg, so not so heavily built either. It has come out only in greyish black outfit. The Display is digital type and is available on the front panel.

This BDPS760B Blu Ray Disc player has a fair number of outputs. They include the HDMI output, S-Video output, SCART connector, Component Video output, Composite video output, 7.1 channel analogue output, analogue stereo output, Optical and Coaxial digital audio output and so on.

Sony BDPS760B Blu-Ray Player

Features:

Video features:
Sony has a variety of features that makes it a real contender against the others. As usual, it also spins DVDs and CDs along with the BD ROMs. The unique features are: It boasts a 1080p output via HDMI cables. This gives a very high definition pictures with optimum quality. Along with the Precision Cinema HD upscale and the DVD upscale features, you can upscale any kind of video or picture up to 1080p to enhance the picture quality. The Video converter is another feature that can be used to inter-convert the video formats. The 24p True Cinema feature makes you feel like you are watching in a theatre. Along with this, the HD Reality enhancer maximises the HD video output.

Audio features:
The Deck features a 7.1 channel analogue audio output for decoding high definition audio, such as DTS-HD and Dolby Digital True HD, to AV receivers that do not have a built-in decoding for HD. But this facility is very limited as admitted by Sony itself. The player has two USB ports, one on the front and the other on the back. The front one is for syncing to the USB flash drives for playing JPEG photos and music files. The one on the back is for the connection of an external hard disk in order to provide some extra memory to the player. There is an Ethernet jack, which is expected from any good Blu-ray player these days. These Ethernet jacks allow you to access the BD- Live functions that are featuring on the Bu-Ray’s online functions.

WiFi Connectivity in BDPS760B:
The most interesting feature of the BDPS760B Blu Ray DVD player is that of the Wi-Fi connectivity, that enables wireless connections between your player and any wireless connection. Via the Wi-Fi connection or the Ethernet facility, you can always access the JPEG pictures on your Computer or any Wi-Fi and Ethernet compatible device. This is a very useful and the most important feature of this player. There are some possibilities of routers that cause a few problems to you. These routers are solely responsible for the activities running behind the scenes without your consent. But they are not that frequent and especially when the player is fairly new. They occur very rarely and are also not unsolvable.  It handles quite a number of file types although not as much as the other products in the market can do. Particularly, the players from Samsung and LG, the other two giants in the electronic arena, can efficiently handle more number of file types.

The Missing Extras:
It also does not support the access to YouTube like its predecessors from Sony. Also, there is no such application as Sony AppliCast in this model as some of the TVs manufactured by the company have featured it in the past. Also, unlike its precursors, the BDP-S760 has no internal memory at all. Even its immediate precursor had a memory of 1 GB. But this time around, Sony has not provided the customers with many of the facilities that they have enjoyed in the past. But, anyway, it has not completely disappointed them since it gave the option of attaching an external hard disk through the USB cables as discussed above. This may be a key factor for Sony as the other companies in the market are ahead of it when it comes to the extra features.

Performance:

This part of the player, the performance, has been the centre of all the talks. Sony was quoted that it has completely concentrated on the performance of its players and it has devoted towards giving the best picture quality ever.  It has not let us down in this aspect and it kept its word. Sony has succeeded in producing stunning picture quality and truly high definition video quality. When it comes to video processing, Sony has somehow managed to produce the picture quality that we normally see in the players of Panasonic. Panasonic is pretty famous for its excellent output. The HD Reality Enhancer and the Super Bit Mapping are two of the best features produced by Sony and these two are instrumental in fancifying the picture quality.

While the HD Reality Enhancer really enhances and smoothens the tone of the image, and significantly reduce the noise effects to produce finer images, the Super Bit Mapping helps the player in adapting the image output to the eighth or tenth or twelfth bit depth of the screen and thereby helps in making the colours look much more natural, just like your TV can do. Also, the upscaling process can do a world of good to the image output quality. Many BD players cannot be as efficient as this one, when playing pictures and videos at 1080p.

Many manufacturers just hail the performance of their players, but in this case, Sony has done what it has said. It has promised the customers, excellent picture quality and has finally put it into action. So, there is no need for any kinds of worries with the playback and performance of your player, if yours is the BDP-S760. There is also no need to worry about the HD reality enhancer damaging the picture and thereby the disc. This was proved to be wrong. On the contrary, it immaculately balances the pictures and finally, the output is truly fascinating.

The Quick start up, Easy set up, Bravia Sync, Xross Media Bar, Photo TV HD, Local storage for BD, Child lock and parental control and a few other features that only increase the performance of the player.

Sony BDPS760B Rear View

Power Consumption:

This BDPS760B Multi Region Blu Ray player is one of the most power efficient and low power consuming BD players in the market. It requires the normal 220-240 V and during operation, it consumes 32 W of power. During the standby, it only consumes 0.19 W. Sony saves your money by featuring the Auto power off option that switches off the player after a standby period of 30 minutes.

Warranty:

Sony offers a warranty period of one year from the date of purchase, for parts and labour.

Verdict:

The Sony BD-S760 is a very impressive player; one the best performer in the market. Although its design and looks do not say much about it, and the features are not as many as the others’ in the market, its cost is a reasonable one and it is an excellent BD player at that cost. This is one of the most affordable BD players ever. Performance wise too, we have no complaints on this player, and so we have no hesitations in recommending the Sony BD-S760 Blu-ray player.

Samsung BD-P4600 Blu-Ray Player Review

The CES in January 2009 demonstrated that the year will mark the beginning of Blu-ray reaching its potential, thanks to a lot of exciting innovations. Most Blu-ray players in the market are BD enabled and have video-on-demand access, making them even more marvellous. This year Samsung has managed to generate a lot of buzz when the Samsung BD-P4600 was premiered. The obvious headline grabber was its “Touch of Colour” design – translucent red highlights, a glossy black finish and rounded corners.  But what is more interesting is the fact this is the world’s first wall-mountable blu-ray player.  It has features that beat out competition quite solidly including Wi-Fi compatibility, 1GB onboard memory and Netfix and Pandore streaming. Its price might be a turn off to some users, but it is an excellent player if you do not mind shelling out some more money for its unconventional design.

Samsung BD-P4600 Blu-Ray player

Design:

Unique design:
The one aspect the BDP 4600 differs from the BDP 3600 is its unusual design. At 1.7 inches, it is relatively flat and is amongst the thinnest players in the market. Its aesthetic round corners, glossy finish and translucent red highlights are amazing. The player perches on an included stand on an angle sloping downward. The player lacks hard buttons; instead it has soft touch sensitive buttons which light up when the player is switched on. When power is unplugged, it appears to be completely button-less and smooth. Because the player is slim, it lacks an ordinary standard disc tray. Instead, it features a slot design system on the side of the system (similar to the PS3).

Connectivity:
Under the unit, are the connectivity ports.  They are relatively lesser in number because of the lesser space on the unit. It lacks multichannel analogue outputs and component video outputs.  However, there are a HDMI output, an optical digital audio output, composite video/stereo outputs and an Ethernet port.  There is also a USB port and a power port, the latter is in the compartment, leading to external power supply. That is a reason why this player is so slim.

Wall Mountable:
Its wall mount ability is evident in its rulebook – rewriting design, making it an attention grabbing high deck.  The deck comes along with hardware for its wall mounting which is where the slim design rules.  On the deck’s front panel are a row of touch sensitive buttons and a small display panel that shows the elapsed time. So, is it worth to shell out more money for a better design? If you think a wall mountable blu-ray player is cool, then this is perfect for you. If you are not fascinated by design, there is the cheaper BDP 3600.

Remote Control:
The remote of the BD-P4600 Blu Ray Disc Player is a tremendously better designed than its previous players.  It has an alluring gloss finish and is probably inspired by the Panasonic models. Its design is pretty much similar to the remotes of the BDP 1600 and BDP 3600. It has big chunky buttons, an intuitive layout and is well labelled. The numeric buttons are at the top of the remote control and the play back functions are right under it. The channel and volume buttons are in the middle of the remote control and the BD J disc buttons at the bottom.  The BD J buttons are colour coded in red, yellow, green and blue and each have their special features. There is also a separate button for subtitles and audio. However, important buttons like the Pop-up Menu, Title Menu and the Disc menu could have been more strategically placed.  There also could have been easy access buttons for NetFlix and Pandora.

Samsung BD-P4600 Wall Mountable Blu-Ray player

Features:

Formats Supported:
Perhaps, the real strength of a Samsung model is its ability to support a huge range of formats. DivX and DivX HD files can be played using either the USB port or on a DVD. The Non DivX files can be read even from a CD and JPEG, JPEG HD, HD and MP3 files can be read from USBs, Hard drives, DVDs and CDs.

Audio Formats:
The BD-P4600 Slim Blu Ray DVD Player is compatible with every HD formats from 1.0 to 7.1 channels, which it can produce HDMI output ready to send to you Television. It supports Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and DTS-HD Master Audio Essential. As mentioned early, it lacks an analogue multi-channel audio output; however, it handles audio formats as a bit stream.

PC Streaming:
An impressive feature of the BD-P4600 Blu-ray player is its PC Streaming. When the P4600 joins a network, be it wired or wireless, it can search other computers to find MP3, JPEG and DivX files. Something similar to what the DLNA offers, though not the same guarantee of success.

Netflix and Pandora Interfaces:
NetFlix allows you to stream over a large number of movies and TV episodes anytime you want to.In the Netflix interface, the instant queue is arranged horizontally on the screen. Like on a computer, you need to find movies and them on the instant queue. That is how you do it on all Netflix Instant Streaming devices, including the Netflix player by Roku, to which the Netflix interface s bears similarity.

Pandora is a free Internet radio service that allows you to program stations to be able to listen to your favourite music. Pandora’s interface is very simple, easy to use and full access is possible from the onscreen menu. Samsung could try going a step further by offering a larger album art images and more information on the artists.

Wi-Fi:
With the BD-P4600 Full HD Blu-Ray playback Player, you can access Internet using Wi-Fi. But for that you need to buy an 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi dongle, which Samsung sells separately. This is one area where LG and Sony fall behind, they do not offer this feature. However, the model has problems connecting through Wi-Fi. It fails to connect to a network sometimes and we think that the Ethernet port is a more valid option to surf the Internet.

Profile 2.0 Compliant:
The Samsung BD P4600 is Profile 2.0 compliant, which means you can receive extra features like sub-titles in other languages, additional terminals, film trailers, game endings and other bonuses. It offers consumer access to different places on DVD and other Blu-ray offers. However, there has not been great content on BD Live as of yet. Hopefully, Samsung will try providing more features. There is a 1 GB in-built Memory provided to store all the downloads from BD Live.

Samsung BD-P4600 Slimmest Blu Ray DVD Player

Performance:

Video Playback:
The BD P4600 delivers rewarding hi-def pictures and can play every track available on Blu-ray, with Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio inside the player and delivered over HDMI It handles colours with a deft hand, while managing to convey gentle and soft tones effectively and stronger colours with deep saturation equally good. The colours are punchy; however, the player seems to struggle on certain occasions to keep motion under control.  The GUI is impressive, while it is not as good as the Sony’s Xross Media Bar., it still is reasonably fast and the graphics are crisp and vivid.

There is sufficient vividity to skin tones and the edges are well marshaled and the field depth is acceptable. However, the overall depth and sharpness of the image is not as impressive as some other players and the movement is not exactly smooth- there is consistent juddering. It offers clear and a radiant presentation; however some shots show minor flickering as well. Chapter skipping was slower than its counterpart the BD 3600. The Silicon Optix HQV Disc instantly detects the correct cadences on the Film and Resolution Loss tests and reproduces them as rotating bar patterns.
Overall, the playback is fine, with its high levels of colour and detail and its low noise levels.

Load speeds:
Speed wise, it is a strong performer managing to take only 18 seconds to power on and load times for Java intensive Blu-ray discs were equally impressive. The PS3 might be faster, but it would not matter much to an ordinary user.

Competent upscaler:
When it comes to upscaling, The BD-P4600 manages to upscale the DVD with similar competence. There is picture noise but the DVD clarity is fine when upscaled to 1080p. The BDP 4600 seemed to be picky about its HDMI handshake when linked to a screen or a multichannel receiver. Another drawback is the fact that sound is just satisfactory; it does not have a low frequency presence or dynamic potency to make the most of great action films. The CD playback reminds you of highly compressed MP3 playback.

Power Consumption:

The BDP 4600 consumes less energy. It uses a mere one watt when on standby and 16 watts while watching movies.

Warranty:

The Samsung BDP 4600 comes with a warranty of one year from the date of purchase.

Verdict:

The USP of the Samsung BDP 4600 is its wall mount-ability.  It might not be what most people are looking for, but if you want your Blu-ray player to look as good as the picture quality it delivers, this is a fine choice. The Blu-ray playback is great; however, upscaling is just not one of the model’s strengths. It has good streaming capabilities and offers Internet Access through WI-FI.  The inbuilt memory of 1 GB and good loading times are added bonuses.  The remote design and the picture quality could have been way better. It is very similar to the Samsung BD P3600, and lacks a 7.1 channel analogue output which is present on the BD P3600.But, if you do not mind shelling out a few more pounds for its design; the player would not disappoint you.
